You pay attention.
When special talents like him come along and make the elite look pedestrian, you pay attention. Eyes glued, you wait for their next superhuman feat. You wait for the final 3 seconds. You wait for them to elevate.
You become curious about them because they don’t seem real. That curiosity draws you in more and more with every move, every reaction, every comment made by them or about them.
You watch so closely, you see them smile and it’s like they’re smiling at you.
And so,.. they become your friend. They don’t know it, or maybe they do. You know it, or maybe you don’t.
But you know each other.
Because watching them makes you feel like you do. Their smile turns into your smile, as you watch them transcend all boundaries and accomplish seemingly unachievable goals.
Your respect for that friend grows when you see how their love for the game is surpassed only by their love of family.
That superhuman talent we watched with perpetual amazement elevates even higher up, into the airs of humanity and to more precious places in our hearts simply by being human...That person we all admire, adore and love, has a family they admire and adore and love just as much.
The great become greater, and we have a new reason to call them a hero.
Then something like yesterday happens, and it doesn’t feel real. The loss doesn’t feel real. Just like every move, every unbelievable shot didn’t feel real. And yesterday punches a hole in our hearts. Because you never expected them to leave you, even if they were never ever physically with you. They made you feel like they were.
They were your friend.
We can remember it all.
And we can be grateful for it all.
Elevate, my friend,
And journey well.
